Google Chrome has not beaten Internet Explorer: Report

WASHINGTON: Recent claims that Google Chrome has surpassed Microsoft's Internet Explorer as the world's leading browser, have turned out to be untrue.

Google Chrome is giving stiff competition to Microsoft's Internet Explorer as the world's most-used desktop browser, having passedFirefox, according to new data collected by Statcounter, which samples the browser-agent string used of thousands of sites.

According to The Guardian, the data for the "world" region on StatCounter for the month so far shows Internet Explorer just ahead, at 32.42 per cent against Chrome's 32.29 per cent, whose share varies by day as well, because a number of people use Internet Explorer at work and then Chrome at home.

Contrary to Chrome being expected to be at the strongest position, results of Statcounter showed that Internet Explorer is the leader in the US and Canada, as those countries have the largest and oldest installed base of PCs, which are most likely to be corporate, and are locked down to using the specific browser.

However, the survey predicted that quite probably Chrome may surpass Internet Explorer for world share by the end of this month.

Another statistic of interest is that Google Chrome is more popular in China and other Asian countries than it is in North America. While in North America, the use of Google Chrome is limited to over 25 per cent of the population, in China/Asia over 37 per cent use it.
