Facebook users will soon be able to update their status by talking into their phones after Apple previewed its new iOS 6 iPhone 5 software at the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) this week.
An exact release date for the iPhone 5 remains under wraps, but Apple CEO Tim Cook told tech fans to 'stay tuned' for improved integration plans with the social network at last month's All Things Digital conference.
And now he has confirmed the closer relationship on day one of the company's flagship WWDC event.
The social networking site is being built into Apple’s iOS 6 software, hailed as 'the world's most advanced operating system', which will run on iPhones and iPads when it launches later this year.
Apple's senior vice president of iOS Software Scott Forstall hailed the revolutionary operating system in his keynote speech at the conference.
'OS 6 continues the rapid pace of innovation that is helping Apple reinvent the phone and create the iPad category, delivering the best mobile experience available on any device,' he said.
'We can’t wait for hundreds of millions of iOS users to experience the incredible new features in iOS 6 including the new Maps app, expanded Siri support, deep Facebook integration, shared photo streams and the innovative new Passbook app.'
It will also allow users to ‘like’ films, music and apps available from the iTunes store, Forstall revealed.
The iOS 6 will be the first to drop Google Maps, with Apple opting to use its own Maps app, which includes traffic reports and satnav.
Siri, Apple’s voice-command app, will feature new languages, be able to launch apps and films, and run on iPads for the first time.
While Siri will be made available to users later this year, the American technology company did not reveal when the eagerly anticipated iPhone 5 would hit the shops.
The super-hi-res MacBook Pro was also unveiled at the electronics giant’s developers’ conference in San Francisco.
Users can expect a 38cm (15-inch) screen and four times the resolution of previous models.
